- Hold at least a current private pilot certificate or be concurrently applying for a private pilot certificate
- Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language
- Complete training on the aeronautical knowledge areas
- Pass the required knowledge test
- Received flight training from an authorized instructor
- Pass a practical test
Hours Required
- 50 hours of cross-country flight as pilot in command
- 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time of which at least 15 hours must have been received from an authorized instructor
Cost
This varies depending on individual ability and weekly availability to train. It is recommended to allow a minimum of 3 days a week to do flight training so that muscle memory can be developed with little time spent on review of the flight maneuvers each training flight. I would recommend that you plan to spend $20,000 – $25,000 to acquire your Instrument Rating.
